Interactive World Map Maker

An interactive map editor for creating custom world maps. Paint countries, subdivide them into states and provinces, merge regions together, reposition territories, and switch between flat and globe projections - all in the browser with no software required.

Features

  • Paint: Click any country or region to fill it with your chosen color. Use the color picker to set the active paint color before clicking.
  • Subdivide: Split a country into its first-level administrative divisions (states, provinces, etc.) sourced from Natural Earth data. Each subdivision can then be painted or merged independently. Subdivisions cannot be undone directly, use Merge to recombine them.
  • Merge: Combine two or more countries or subdivisions into a single region. Select regions by clicking them (they highlight in blue), then press Merge. The new region takes the name of the largest area. Merged regions can be restored to their originals via Subdivide.
  • Relocate: Drag any country or region to a new position on the map. Useful for alternate-history maps and custom diagrams. Note: positional accuracy is approximate, and projection distortion applies.
  • Rename: Right-click any region and select Rename to give it a custom label.
  • Isolate: Right-click any region and select Isolate to hide all other countries, leaving only that region visible. Right-click anywhere and choose Unisolate All to restore the full map.
  • Labels, Markers, & Borders: Toggle country name labels, custom markers, and border lines independently for cleaner or more detailed views.
  • Themes: Choose from Light, Dark, or Earth color schemes for the base map. Choose the "Satellite" theme to see Earth's real terrain.

Projections

Switch between Mercator (flat, rectangular) and Globe (interactive 3D sphere) projections.

Projection is not accurate when using the relocate tool

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I undo actions?
There is no general undo. Subdivisions can be reversed by merging the resulting regions back together. Merges of countries can be reversed by right-clicking the merged region and choosing Subdivide, which restores the originals. Paint and rename changes cannot currently be undone.
Can I subdivide states/provinces into counties?
No. The map data only goes down to first-level administrative divisions (states and provinces). County-level data is not included.
Why does a country look different from other maps?
The map data reflects who is currently in control of the land, not necessarily internationally recognized borders. Some disputed territories may appear differently than on official government maps.
Where does the map data come from?
Country and subdivision boundaries are sourced from Natural Earth, with additional processing applied to reduce file size and improve load times.
How does merging work?
Select the Merge tool, click any regions to highlight them in blue, then click Merge. The result is a single region named after the largest selected area, assigned an internal identifier (MRGxxx). Right-click the merged region and choose Subdivide to restore the originals.
Can I export the map?
Not currently. You can use your browser's screenshot or print-to-PDF functionality to capture the current map view.
